ALLENDALE, MI - Firefighters responded to a kitchen fire Sunday morning at Grand Valley State University, only to find thick smoke after an attempt to make sugar cookies.
The fire happened in the North Living Center on campus causing a full evacuation. The building contained mostly sleeping students. No one was injured.
A resident advisor went to make cookies around 11 a.m. Sunday morning. When she preheated the oven, she forgot a few items were stored inside including a dish rack.
A security officer put the majority of the fire out with an extinguisher, sprinklers in the room kept the fire from spreading.
A spokeswoman for the Grand Valley Housing department says over 100 students live in the building. Some were evacuated so quickly they were still wearing pajamas or bath robes.
The fire only damaged the one room, though there is smoke damage to a few others.
A liuetenant with the Allendale Fire Department says all rooms in the living center have ovens. He said, "They are more like apartments than dorms." |
